NEWS

Weekend round-up: 27/28 April. A final lost heroically, a quarter-final won on penalties!

It's that time of the season when cup competitions reach their climax. We had a mixed weekend in that respect.

The Colts finished on the wrong side of the result in an amazing Selkent Cup One final against Erith & Belvedere Pink at Meridian Sports on Saturday.

1-0 up and then 2-1 down going into the last minute of normal time, they equalised and then went ahead 3-2 in the first period of extra time, only to be overhauled in the last ten minutes to go down 4-3. John Phillips scored with a great free kick, Jack Blue hit the equaliser for 2-2 and Bobby Slatter struck in extra time.

The match was a credit to both sets of players, it's just unfortunate that there had to be a loser.

Then on Sunday the Yellow Vets finally played their quarter-final of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at home to Mayfair Vets. The visitors scored to go 2-1 up with seven minutes to go but five minutes later leading scorer Jack Loizou popped up to send the game into extra time. The deadlock couldn't be broken so penalties decided the outcome, FOBG emerging winners by 3-2. Debutant keeper George Williams was the hero, saving two spot kicks to give George Kleanthous' side a semi-final against Lads of the Village Vets. The manager reported "Overall it was the best team performance of the season and every player battled really hard against a well organised Mayfair team to pull out the result, especially as we went 1-2 down so late in the game. I am extremely proud of every player and look forward to the semi-final".

Back to league action, and the First XI had no fixture. The Second XI pulled off a very good result, winning 1-0 away to OLAHM courtesy of a "worldie of a free kick" from Tommy Chalker.

The Saturday Vets shot themselves in the foot, conceding a late equaliser in a disappointing 3-3 draw away to AFC Green Court Veterans. Danny Oakins, Dave Rose and Matt Ellis scored but the result means the title is now out of reach.

The Sunday XI fought out a 0-0 draw with Spartans at Farrow Fields, only the eighth competitive goalless draw for the Sunday XI in 14 years and the first since a home league game v. Kenningwell United in January 2022.

The Red Vets returned to form with an excellent 3-2 victory away to Wickham Park Vets. Steve Shippey and Dan Hillary netted before a thumping header from big Jon Gasson won the game. Manager Damien Preston said "Everyone played well today digging deep against a physical side and coming back from a 2-1 half-time deficit".

The Under 13s also returned to winning ways in style with a 7-1 win at home to Dartford. Harry Lauder and Chaz Favata each got a hat-trick with Kian Taylor on the scoresheet.
