Sunday XI
Dan Head
1 - 1
Chelsfield Old boys

By Vince Wray

Today was a much better performance than we’ve produced lately. We looked more balanced our attitude was good and we all competed well. We took a 1-0 lead early in the 2nd half but by then we should already have held the lead and should have added to our total but the opposition goalkeeper was in very good form and produced at least two unbelievable stops. Chelsfield know that this was a let off for them and they know they were a bit fortunate to scrape a draw.

We edged the first half, Chelsfield did look dangerous from corners and free kicks and that is not unusual, we must really work on that. But we counted three very good chances that went begging, one from a great shot from Nott which the keeper somehow managed to keep out. As I mentioned earlier we looked a much more cohesive unit today. The back five looked good and sound, Skrine had a very good game in the centre of midfield, we looked good upfront, and Williams and Wray posed constant problems for their defence down the flanks. 0-0 at half time.

The 2nd half was all Farnborough and we deservedly took the lead after Nott released Williams out on the right, he sped past three defenders down the flank leaving them for dead, produced a lovely cross for Head to ‘head’ home. The keeper got a hand to it but this time it was good enough. We just couldn’t get the 2nd Wade had a shot saved and one cleared off the line and we continued to dominate, Chelsfield had hardly given our defence anything to worry about. There must have been about 8 minutes left when they stole an equaliser. We let the concentration levels down and they managed to capitalise on a wayward pass out from us which led to a break forward through our defence, Burkett rushed out and made a great challenge but the ball fell to their forward who managed to place the ball into the corner of the net. 1-1 disaster !!

We battled gamely to get back in it but to no avail. We were made to pay dearly for those missed chances. But we must take encouragement from the actual performance which was very good, we just need to put the icing on the cake next time. If we play like this and can keep producing this type of performance we will definitely win more games than we lose. So it’s a question of well done and let’s keep our heads up and keep producing this level of team commitment and performance levels.
